This is not an exhaustive list, but a list of game engines that members of the club actively use. If you choose one of these engines, then there is a good chance someone in the club will be able to give you advice while you are learning how to use it.
Unity
Well suited for quickly making 3D games. Abundance of tutorials easily available. Not the best at 2D games as it lacks many features found in other engines that are more 2D focused such as tilemaps and easily setting up sprite animations.
